By learning how to conquer the inner critic and access our inner coach, we begin to change the dialogue we have in our heads and we begin to let go of perfectionism. Many people struggle with the expectation that we have to be perfect. We have to do our purpose perfectly. We have to live our life perfectly. We tell ourselves that we are not allowed to mess up and make mistakes. Why? Because messing up triggers stress and we don’t like to feel stress. So we live our lives expecting perfection in ourselves and others. I think some of these messages were planted in our brains when we were young and some we’ve learned along the way. They are culture based.

But guess what? There is no such thing as a perfect anything! We are perfectly imperfect people and we do perfectly imperfect things. Humans makes mistakes. If we were perfect, then we would not be human.

I don’t know about you, but some of my greatest and most important lessons have come from a mistake I made. I am one stubborn human being. I don’t learn the easy way. Unfortunately, I like to do things my way. And most of the time, my way, which is intended to be the easy way, turns out to be the complicated, hard way. But you know what? Today I am okay with that. I am okay with it because at least I am trying it in the first place. While I am learning how to surrender and do things God’s way, I know that if I mess up, then He will fix it for me. He always does.

For Today

Allow yourself to be human and make mistakes. And when you do make a mistake, don’t be afraid to reflect on it.  What did you gain from the experience?  What might you do different next time?  This life is a journey; an imperfect one.  We take two steps forward and one step back.  This is normal part of the process and is how we continue to progress as long as we do not shut down and avoid continuing on the path.  Try to remember the slogan from Alcoholics Anonymous Twelve Step Program, “Progress, not perfection.”
